DSV – keeping offshore online

Company of the Month - November 2016

It’s no good if the spare parts for your wind turbine are made on the other side of the world and take weeks to deliver, leaving electricity generation offline and your investment idle.
DSV helps offshore companies stay online. In a cost-conscious industry, it’s clear that using the lowest-cost transport method to get products to their destination is high on the agenda. But once your wind turbine farm or drilling rig is in place, keeping downtime to an absolute minimum is right up there too. At DSV, our supply chain experts work with our project transport teams to make sure the spare parts are delivered offshore on time too.

We work with our customers to help identify what we call the “centre of gravity” in a region and set up a local warehouse close to the final destinations. So those weeks of transit time by ship from Asia to Europe, for example, don’t mean weeks of downtime – the slow ship becomes a moving warehouse – and ships are the lowest cost transport.

At the other end of the scale is air freight, the most expensive option but by far the fastest. On occasion something will need to be flown urgently, but by establishing an efficient supply chain the need for those flights is kept to a minimum. Rail is also a good compromise when a time saving of a few weeks justifies the slightly higher cost – and it’s also very environmentally friendly.

The key point is that being an “asset light” freight forwarder as well as a third party logistics provider means DSV can negotiate the best deals with many different shipping companies, thus getting customers the best possible value for money.

DSV has worked with the energy industry for many years, and has the know-how for offshore working too. Our combination of flexible transport solutions and innovative supply chain logistics gives our customers the best of all worlds.
